The
Muskoka Lakes Museum is welcoming the Lieutenant Governor of
Ontario, The Honourable James Bartleman, on Saturday July 28
to Port Carling. The day’s events will include the
official naming of a local park, followed by entertainment
and a book signing. Born and raised in this lake country
community two hours north of Toronto, the event is planned
to honour the Lieutenant Governor as he completes his tenure
as Ontario’s Vice Regal representative.
“With
all of the recognition that Mr. Bartleman has brought to the
history of Port Carling, we thought it would be appropriate
to recognize the culmination of his term on a day that will
also celebrate the heritage of our beautiful village,”
says Saundra
Turnbull, co-chair of the organizing committee for the
Museum Day.
The
Lieutenant Governor will be ferried by antique steamboat to
arrive at the picturesque island between the locks at 10:00
a.m. The party will be accompanied by a flotilla of classic
wooden boats for which this resort community is famous. At a
ceremony commencing at 10:30 a.m., the District of
Muskoka’s Locks Park will be named James Bartleman Island
Park in recognition of his great accomplishments.
“It
has been a great source of pride for us to have a Port
Carling resident serve in such a distinguished position,”
says Muskoka Lake Township Mayor Susan Pryke. “We have
been very fortunate to be associated with this gracious
gentleman. I can think of no better tribute to James
Bartleman than the renaming of Island Park in his honour.”
Along
with the ceremonies to honour the Lieutenant Governor,
Muskoka Lakes Museum Day will also feature antique and
classic boat and car exhibits, displays by local artisans,
children’s games, and various performers including a Métis
storyteller. Refreshments
will be available for sale.
Mr.
Bartleman will be signing his most recent book, Raisin
Wine, and sale of the books will be accompanied by an
“Everything Raisin” bake sale.
The
event is a fundraiser for the Muskoka Lakes Museum, a
registered charity that represents the history of the
Muskoka lakes. An important cultural, historical and
educational resource, the Museum serves the community and
visitors through permanent and seasonal exhibits,
children’s programs, workshops, an adult lecture series,
and special events.
